of course you have to have some way of funding yourself, but the amount of busywork for subsistence wages you get as a grad student is probably more than just having a side gig, if you need one

really the only reason to rely on academia imo is if you need access to the Large Hadron Collider or some other piece of nonreplacable infrastructure
