What it boils down to (and this is the management summary, so I cut corners for brevity): a mod on fosstodon has been going off the rails on other social media. And indeed bat shit crazy. He/she has been removed. The response of the fosstodon team to all this has been a bit too muted to the liking of others. I didn't delve any deeper, but some instances have been defederating fosstodon over this.
