Developers of operating systems, web browsers, and email clients make no attempt to educate users about security while onboarding, so it’s no surprise that users do dumb things.
We want to pretend that novices should be able to use computers—because there’s more profit that way!—but they can’t. They struggle. If we wait until the moment of decision to start educating them, with an unexpected popup warning, it’s far too late. That’s the worst time. Like trying to do driver’s ed while driving!
