The stupid part of that whole trial was what was done to Patricia "Patty" Hearst. She was convicted and sent to prison after being kidnapped and tortured by members of the SLA. Her only crime was being afraid of what would happen to her if she tried to escaped. "Everyone knew" that she must have wanted to be part of the SLA since she didn't resist the efforts of brainwashing. This was before PTSD was recognized for what it was and how powerful it could be.
