The surveillance boogeyman isn't the only reason to like Monero. It's easy for regular people like your family members to use it without showing everyone how much they own, and without relying on a trusted 3rd party.
Everyone acknowledges risk of bugs in Monero. Everyone acknowledges the risk of a potential hidden inflation bug in Monero. What you don't seem to understand is that this bug in Liquid was not that. It was much closer to Bitcoin's exploited inflation bug and was similarly caused by bad code. Not bad math.
