Good instinct, but an extension can't quite get there alone. Browsers won't let extensions register a bare nsite:// scheme. I'm not sure what else could be done.
Tor Browser bundles a local proxy, I think that's how it gets around the scheme like that.
Maybe that could be done.
Interesting thought to bypass normal resolution and do local resolution here instead.
