It's not just consumers turning their backs, but businesses.

Example: we've a new green grocer in our town and they are cash only. They go to the market every day for fresh supplies, and the market is cash only, so by getting customers to pay them in cash they keep bank fees down.

As with a lot of social issues, banks are the ultimate problem, charging businesses through the nose for every penny in and out of their accounts, regardless of source.
