Having more implementations locks down the protocol. It changes Bitcoin from being managed by a single "reference implementation" repository into a true federation built on that reference as it was intended, a protocol document. This is how the protocol is ossified. The more options for noderunners means more imposition of the spirit of a decentralized currency.
