As a former probation officer and criminology researcher, I can confidently say that the >£30,000 per year spent on a person’s incarceration could be better spent on a dedicated case worker to help disadvantaged families with parenting, education access, food insecurity, addiction issues, access to healthcare, etc. it would hugely reduce the workload of social services and the NHS too.
