I've made it my goal to never have to say "sorry, I didn't realize that". Not saying it's easy, but training yourself to ask questions/gather more information when emotions rise (assuming no imminent threat exists) gives time and space to later only raise your voice because you chose to for effect rather than from emotion.

Good news is you'll have hundreds of times in the near future where kids will get you upset and you'll get to improve your response and be the dad/friend you aspire to become.
