Modern internet. In the ancient days of the 90s there was a company called XBAND and they used a 2600 Baud modem to allow gameplay on the SNES and Sega Genesis instead of the more common 28.8k or maybe the bleeding edge 56k modems. The reasoning being that the Baud Modem would have less latency than the higher speed modem because the data wasn't compressed. Baud would be sending the button actions mostly uncompressed.
