My wife is taking in-house french training at her work for people aiming at their C's and, wow, the advice she is getting is so different than what my tutors were giving me.

Basically I was told "express your own self and try to speak naturally" and my sessions where wide ranging conversations where the tutors corrected my grammar and pronunciation.

She's being given specific formulas and almost magic words that she should memorize and regurgitate.

Her baseline is also much higher than mine (French immersion vs small town Ontario English), so maybe some of it is that, but I don't know. Maybe I got lucky and had someone who wanted me to actually be bilingual where hers wants to tick a box on how many people can pass the test.
