and these departments are very intersectional, of course. they aren't limited to one form of discrimination.
personal story time. in early 2013 i had the chance to go to the US to study and I decided not to because it would mean leaving my husband (at the time) behind, because the department of birthplace discrimination did not recognize same-sex marriages. DOMA was struck down later that year, so if I had waited a year I could have made a different choice.
