Update on last night's experiments though (it wasn't exciting enough to justify a blog post) - extracting screenshots from the test set using the "Print to Serial Port" option is... not feasible.
It takes at least 2 minutes to transfer the 40k of PCL data at the maximum 19200 baud. Mainly because the test set waits ~5 seconds between bursts of data (I guess because normally a printer with a small buffer and slow drain rate would be on the other end!)
