I think one problem is that these net-negative people are often adding a little something, whether it’s sex that’s good enough to be better than no sex, someone to pay half the rent, or someone to talk to. I think people (talking about women here, primarily) often have trouble knowing how to weigh, for example, “someone to pay half the rent” against “bringing me down emotionally,” or “someone to talk to” against “wasting my time.”
