So it turns out that all of the egg and chicken prices have been insane because the government did that on purpose.
They bio-engineered a superflu for birds
(It also spread to a bunch of other animals and to humans probably contributed to the crazy flu season this year)

So the way this works:
The government forces chicken Farmers to do flu testing periodically, and when they find a chicken who is infected they kill the entire flock.
Normally that does a pretty good job of preventing widespread infection however because this flu was given to ducks by the government, those ducks just keep flying around to different farms till and they keep reinfecting the new flocks.

Over 200,000,000 chickens have been wrongfully killed for this.
