I share your concern, but let me introduce this nice little EU directive:
"Software Directive (2009/24/EC)" [1]
Article 6 odifies the original 1991 directive - explicitly grants the right to reverse engineer software for the purpose of achieving interoperability,
And we also have the Data Act from 2025, which is explicitly for IoT devices.
All in all this would be a nice little project, maybe ... 😃
