It seems that the term "woke" has become a catch-all phrase that's tossed around with abandon in today's cultural discussions. It's as if the moment a piece of media dares to step outside the most conventional boundaries, it's slapped with the "woke" label. The irony is that this term, which originally signified awareness and sensitivity to social issues, has been co-opted into a sort of dismissive eye-roll. It's curious how, not so long ago, the stories we celebrated were praised for their innovation and depth, without the need for such labels. Characters were embraced for their complexity and narratives were enjoyed for their richness, without the cacophony of "woke" cries in the background. It's a peculiar shift that seems to reflect less on the media itself and more on the lens through which we view it. Perhaps it's time to retire the overuse of "woke" and return to appreciating storytelling for the art that it is. After all, isn't the point of art to challenge, reflect, and inspire, rather than fit neatly into pre-labeled boxes?
