Two things. Firstly, there are literally millions of postgraduates or posdocs on the planet. You are probably going to say that they aren't all in academia. Many more of them would be if we made places for them instead of doing stupid austerity economics with higher education or trying to automate jobs that humans are really good at.
Secondly, if we abandoned numbers of publications as a metric for academic success there would suddenly be a lot less stuff to wade through.
