A car on deck 3 came loose from its chains, and hit a pipe. This was the emergency seewater feed to the fire fighting pumps (which draw from freshwater tanks first). Breaking that pipe allowed seawater to flow freely to flood compartiment.

Due to the ship's list, the oil intake stopped drawing in oil from the oil reservoir, so engine stopped and they couldn't steer anymore.

Ship had Titanic style open lifeboats which are not survvable in a hurricane.
