The "pretty display" of emails does not let you see who is sending what. It only displays the "pretty" to and FROM that are in body in message, no the actual to/from used in the negotiation. The original message did not necessarily originate on Google, and not sure why Google would accept it and then issue non delivery instead of rejecting it at time of sending. That is why seeing the real message with headers is important, but web interfaces are dumbed down and prevent this.
