The Vesper is a cocktail a novelist invented for a character and named for a woman he was about to lose.

Bond orders it in Casino Royale (1953): three measures of Gordon's gin, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet, shaken until ice-cold, then a large thin slice of lemon peel. He names it for Vesper Lynd. For the bitter aftertaste, he says.

Which is where the drink and the story come apart. Kina Lillet is no longer produced, and the quinine is exactly what modern versions are missing; a purist reaches for Cocchi Americano, or Lillet Blanc. The legend travels. The record has to be rebuilt each time, from what's actually in the glass.

That's the job I keep taking: writing the room and the drink down before they change, so the version that survives is the true one.
