if I live to see the majority of humanity not wanting me or my friends dead I will be genuinely surprised, since I believe that humanity simply has to target and revel in hunting down minorities, it just changes its methods and targets to fit in with the time, but has never stopped. Witchhunts have never stopped, just changed form. I don't know if I would say humanity progresses. They just change form to something more efficient and call it progress while fundamentally staying the same. In a way it is progress, yes, though it's all the same to me. Though, speculating about what will happen in several centuries after my death is not something I think is very accurate to do.
If I see literally any evidence that humanity as a collective is anything but a self-destructive, vile creatures that revel in causing suffering to anyone differing from the norm enough, I'll probably change my mind, but no matter how much I read about history or any humanitarian science, I see only further proof of this. Though perhaps it's confirmation bias, I've lacked the energy to really read more since November.
To be clear: individual humans are absolutely capable of empathy, compassion, and can lack the love for causing harm. I just do not believe any sufficiently large society of humans is capable of that. Probably because I've never heard of that ever happening, or can see much of a difference in the (imo) fundamental lack of empathy in human societies that seem unchanging since time immemorial.
