He didn't legalize pedophilia. That's something right-wing outlets made up to create a false association between gay rights and pedophilia, as they've done for decades.
What actually happened:
Pedophilia was already legal in California, if the child is at least 14 years old, and the adult is no more than 10 years older. For example: a 24 year-old with a 14 year-old, or a 25 year-old and a 15 year-old, and so on.
But the law said it's only legal if it's a heterosexual couple having penis-in-vagina intercourse. Other types of sex were illegal. He got that exception in the law removed.
So... now it's pedophilia for everyone, and not just straight people. In other words, the problem goes much deeper and has nothing to do with gay activists like him.
(I don't know anything about the "letting the state take gay kids" part or where that claim comes from.)
