I'm fairly sure that Borland Turbo C/C++ for Windows gray and beveled widgets predated CDE per se, although they very directly DID borrow the Motif look; I had Turbo C++ for Windows in the early 90s, and the manual explicitly said something like that the Borland widgets used the "chiseled look" of X11 applications. Microsoft's toolkit at that time had gray and beveled _buttons_, but everything else was flat-ish and defaulted to white.
