Unfortunately, I run my own instance, so…
I think the way Mastodon is explained often includes too much irrelevant information. For the most part Mastodon is no worse than your regular social media. You go to a site and sign up. Following people in other instances a bit weird but otherwise OK. Almost none of the fedi stuff is relevant to the actual use of the platform for an average user.
