I just have 0.5lb plates on mine now. I stuck 2.5lb plates on there and the width at the end was a non issue.
I think the DF centers the weight closer to the end which makes it harder in lever positions.
You could easily fit 10x 2.5lb plates on the DF club for 30lbs. Think about trying to swing a 20lb sledge 1 handed for a while and you'll see you can get plenty strong. I can snatch double 24k kettlebells for reps and I think my club is loaded to 7.5lbs (including club weight, so like 2lbs of plates) right now.
