Yes, I imagine that before, for devs like you and VitorPamplona (npub1gcx…nj5z) for example that code new features very fast, and that in addition to that have a big follower base that translates into many many devs contributing for the open-sourced repo to get improved in an even faster pace, made it unfeasable for a copy-cat to compete.
Open-sourcing were just making your products better with lower labor cost. The community of open-source contributors in return was using an improved product and could show their contributions as portfolio. A win-win situation at the time.
