Retiree here. (Not a financial advisor.) Your post is good advice.

The simple rule of thumb is "Don't gamble with money you cannot afford to lose."

It's hard to stay steady when you see losses. (I once lost 50% of my retirement fund in the so-called "dot com bust".)

But timing the market is too hard for most (if not all) investors. If you look at the history of the stock market, this tortoise and hare analogy rules: "Slow and steady wins the race."
