Biomethane can be cleaned up and injected directly into a natural gas system, directly displacing natural gas. In that sense it is reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Really depends on what the goal is. A direct reduction of greenhouse gas by avoiding methane entirely, or displacing natural gas with a renewable source that has its own significant downsides. Still generating CO2, but it isn't as bad as methane.

I look at biogas as a bridge to get off fossil fuels. Anything that can help cut that industry off from revenue helps move the needle, more than the weight of avoided carbon emissions.
