I think you conflated 2 unrelated things. Data centers don’t provide internet service to residents. The amount of data center space required to supply internet service is minimal. If the goal is tech and ISP for locals, it could be scaled way down.

Maybe you’re thinking that data centers can get a lot of money into a community, but they come with all these negatives. So the plan is alleviating the negatives. I don’t know if you’ve looked at the long-term viability of data centers, or the profit margins. They are very low profit. Sometimes the companies using a data center are very profitable. But the renting of computers in racks is a low-profit business.

So I like the thinking and the goal, but I think the data centres are a bad long-term bet for a community. They are so capital intensive, single-purpose, and super slow to build. A community starting today would cut the ribbons in like 2-3 years. And the AI/data centre landscape will be radically different at that time. I think it’s a bubble, not a permanent change to bank on.
