The Casket Girls of New Orleans.

The Casket Girls, or filles à la cassette, were young women sent from France to New Orleans in the early 1700s to marry colonial men. They arrived with small suitcases, or “cassettes,” which over time led to their name being morphed into the more macabre “Casket Girls.”

The women were initially chosen from convents and orphanages, intended to be virtuous brides. However, many faced mistreatment and ended up in unwanted marriages or worse. Legends grew around these women, particularly regarding their pale skin and the mysterious storage of their belongings in the third floor of the Ursuline Convent. This floor, sealed off and believed to be haunted, became central to vampire tales in the city.

The lore suggests that their caskets carried more than just clothes—possibly vampires. While historically inaccurate, these stories are a captivating part of New Orleans’ haunted history. Today, the Old Ursuline Convent is a key stop on haunted tours, where visitors can explore the myths surrounding these mysterious brides.

Note: Whether the Casket Girls were vampires or simply victims of a harsh colonial life, their story has become an integral part of New Orleans folklore.
