I recall getting into a mailing list argument argument about supporting it properly in the in-kernel terminal emulator. It forgot UTF-8ness after a hard reset sequence and had to be configured again using (if I recall correctly) an `ioctl` to set it back again. I felt a detail like that should be remembered.
