I remember the difficulties with the original developer, just didn't follow up how the story continued. The problem always is this: lack of organisation and institutionalisation. Eugen turning his project into a non-profit company, listed in Germany, being able to hire people and basically make a living from it, helped Mastodon a lot. But he clearly has a management gene, which a lot of devs don't have. Not sure if this story can be replicated.
