I see no plausible theory about there being anything nefarious behind this like wanting to be able to do more effective data harvesting.
When has Google ever done anything not evil in the past few years? Data gathering itself is their digital gold.
a bipartisan push
Anything bipartisan is almost always against the good of the American people. Also bipartisanship is a myth. There is only one party. They're actors on a stage and they pretend to squabble when, in the end, they get exactly what their lobbyist want.
What I see happening is a bipartisan push for restricting children's access to various online content, because it's been running rampant for ages
Once again, this is the parents responsibility! There are already tons of commercial available products that can limit children's access to adult websites. Parents can tell their kids porn is bad (if the parent believes that) and can even tell the kid they struggle with porn and instill those values. The kid will grow into a teenager who either accept that morality or reject it.
If the parent doesn't care about porn, well this serves no purpose for them.
I guess we should just agree to disagree. I think you're doing some really weird mental gymnastics to defend governments and corporations who do not deserve any defense, and who are actively working to continually erode all privacy and collect all your data.
You seem to be on a feminist instance and I know some of them are insanely anti-porn (like Louise Perry .. an example of an extreme authoritarian feminist who is for larger government). So maybe that value is so strong for you that you'll defend this. But it doesn't do what you think it will ... and by the time this grows into needing your government ID tied to being able to browse your banking website, well than it will be too late.
I don't want to say I told you so, because then it will be too late for the rest of us too. I want this insanity to stop.
