we are going the opposite way with our children. No sight words, but rather learning phonograms first, then how to write the letter, then how to read.
In this way, the child learns how to read unknown new words indefinitely.

It takes a lot longer to be "reading a few words", but we think it will pay off later.
It is also supposed to help avoid dyslexia also.

It is called Writing Road to Reading, or The Spalding Method.
