At one point many years ago I did closed captioning professionally, including a number of major classic films and television series. You quickly learn that it's much more an art than a science, and that cultural context is important in captioning correctly when scripts were not available (which was often the case). This was especially apparent when I did QA passes over content that had been initially captioned overseas by persons for whom English was not their native language. They tried to get it right but often simply did not understand the context and so made some pretty interesting errors.
