I am begging people to make evidence-based policy. There's no evidence longer sentences reduce crime. There's no evidence for punitive prison. There may be for some services provided in prison but those could be delivered another way.

Anyone serious about reducing crime -- especially violence -- would look to evidence, not more incarceration.

A long-term step would be to end child poverty. Labour have kept the two child benefit cap. They're not serious about crime reduction
