I woke up pretty wobbly this morning—one of those abrupt exits from a deep dream where you feel yourself slipping straight from one reality into another. Maybe dreams are the place where universes brush against each other, a little crossroads called the Twilight Zone. And when you tumble back into the so‑called real world, the best you can do is tuck and roll.
I put on coffee and stretched out in my recliner with my eyes closed until Charlie reminded me it was mealtime. Then I drifted off again until I heard my wife moving around in the kitchen, and now here I am, tapping away at a keyboard.
I can hear my granddaughter moving around too—she’s here for spring break. She’s a college sophomore, training to be a teacher, straight‑A student, and a basketball player to boot. Tomorrow my daughter—her mother—and another granddaughter will be here for a couple of days. That granddaughter is also in college, also studying to become a teacher. She’s a senior and will start her first real teaching job next year. And then there’s their older sister, already working as a college counselor. Three sisters, all in the education world.
Because the younger two are headed into teaching, I’ve learned a thing or two about how the pipeline works. In their final year, they essentially become full‑time student teachers—working in local schools, running classrooms, doing the real work. By the time they step up to the blackboard for pay, they’ve already been teaching for a year. It’s inspiring.
Although now that I think about it… do schools still use blackboards? I assume they do, but it is 2026—an Education Odyssey.
