Fossilised animals were often killed by the event that created good conditions for fossilisation. Submarine landslides, falls into tar pits. They didn't just die for other reasons, then by a lucky chance become fossilised.
This means that fossilisation events exercised selection pressure on these species.
Is there any scientific work from this angle?
