I was in Altrincham a few years after the last steam engines had been retired and there was that smell in the air. People stopped and sniffed, many started walking towards it, me included. It got stronger as the crowd approached the station. We piled onto the platform - to watch a maintenance crew install concrete railway sleepers and burn the old wooden ones.
