My unpopular heritage opinion is that it’s basically impossible to conserve housing forms from before the late 20th century with the changes in household makeup and living standards. People used to sleep their kids three and four to a bedroom, then kick them out at fifteen. Of course people want big extensions now. It’s because we don’t triple bunk teenagers anymore
