I've never stayed in a camping ground and the thought leaves me cold.

In the early 60s Dad renovated an old caravan and we'd spend xmas holidays at nice places like Hawea. Back then we'd have the whole place to ourselves for two weeks and the most exciting activity was catching cicadas in a matchbox then letting them go.

In the mid 70s my GF and I travelled the whole country in a CF Bedford van with a mattress in the back and just camped in the wild. The only place we got moved on was Queenstown.

When my own kids were growing up we'd set up our tents inside the hippy farm at Marahau. We had a big field all to ourselves with a river nearby, and it was free.

I'm definitely not a camping ground type of guy.
