It wasn’t until 1981 that the first legally binding international instrument on data protection and privacy was adopted. Then, later in 1987, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) decision in Leander v. Sweden became known as a cornerstone of Strasbourg case law on the processing of information about individuals.
