That is weird indeed if it works through the browser. Maybe it's because you're signed in with your Google account in the browser? That's the only explanation.
Endpoint of the VPN is the company that provides the IP address. Most of them are blocked/black-listed by Google. Only some companies like DataCamp and M273 work; probably because they are like Google.
