Turns out a local family, people I knew – father, mother, daughter and a neighbor – had decided to drive to town that day.

Just north of where I lived there was what we called the 'twin bridges' where a bridge crossed the Klickitat river to a small island and then continued on to the other side. The river was so high at that point there was about six inches of water over the roadway.

Safe to cross? Hardly…
