Hit me with examples of *manual computing*! Let's define it as *computing without electricity*. The abacus is one example. Using dice as RNGs or counters is another. But there are more subtle ways, like in ' post*, where there is some state and some knowledge required for a human to interpret that state. Board games are yet another example, where there is a set of rules, some changing state, represented by various game pieces, the players mutually observe that the rules are being followed, and the result is a winner. I keep wondering what other ends some board-game-like setup could be used for.
