Very exciting about the riso acquisition! Definitely drums with caked on shit can get cleaned depending on your patience.

The mesh screen is the most delicate of the pieces it can get kinks in it that transfer to your images. It is replaceable and you could just replace them. The OEM ones are better than the knock offs but if you want to add more "noise/imperfections" vibes the knock offs are like a lower LPI count if you are thinking of it like screen printing!

Below is a walk through of one person's cleaning method. Technical manuals for your machine will give you a disassembly and reassembly guide, sometimes hard to find but I think you're crafty with computers so you can probably find one. Tech manual/service manual is how they are identified and sometimes they encompass multiple models.

I have used citrus degreasers before for cleaning. It's soy based ink so think things that leave no residue and break up oil. Scentless mineral spirits are also good but be careful with rags, they can self-combust!
