just wondering how everyone is using AI in general. Seems that people are using AI write up an outline of a paper based on a conversation with AI and then you go back and fill in the meat. Flesh out the ideas. Make the proofs clear and fill in any gaps.
Putting aside the waste of resources (electricity and water) my impression is that AI is being used as a time saver. To get the ball rolling, creating a rough draft of a paper that will ultimately be rewritten from top to bottom.
If I have an idea for something, I’ll have a conversation with AI. What if we do this? Try that? And so on. But so far I’ve never asked AI to create an outline of a paper. There’s nothing wrong with that especially if one adds the acknowledgement about how AI has was used but psychologically it makes me feel guilty.
I’ve asked AI to look up references that I want to include in my paper but asking AI to create an outline of a paper is something I haven’t tried yet. But apparently lots of people are doing that and they’re adding the AI acknowledgment so I guess it’s fine.
So the way I view AI is that it’s a time saver (there’s lot of tedious things one used to have to work out by hand that AI is good at), an assistant to bounce ideas off who also checks proofs for gaps and gives feedback.
While AI is a powerful tool, I also don’t trust it entirely since I’ve seen it major mistakes. I’ve seen it make up nonsense. AI hallucinations.
