Washington has now enacted a law targeting digital firearm manufacturing code, including possession when the state claims there was intent to distribute it or use it to make a firearm unlawfully. California already imposes civil liability for the distribution of similar code; New Jersey criminalises the distribution; and New York is pushing printer-blocking proposals.
That should worry everyone.
Once the state starts punishing digital files based on inferred intent, the line between stopping harm and criminalising knowledge gets dangerously thin.
